Tux!

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

Linux is a free computer operating system that comes in many different flavours know as ‘Distributions’.

Each Distribution has it’s own logo / mascot, but Tux seems to be the default international cross-distribution Penguin mascot for Linux fans everywhere.

A Google image search for ‘Linux Tux’ gives more than 210,00 results, and shows the smiling (smirking?) Penguin in a many many guises.

Joseph Hall created a very impressive 3d rendition of Tux as a cake, and gives detailed step by step instructions for you to make your own. (All ten steps! From Step 1 – baking the base, to Step 10 – storage and transportation.)

He’s almost too cute to cut into isn’t he?

See you Friday !

Transformers… cakes are in disguise

Monday, July 28th, 2008
Over at Technabob“, a wonderfully crafted Transformer cake is showcased. Created for an incredibly lucky 5 year old boy called Evan, This Transformer cake features a very detailed sugar icing rendition of Optimus Prime.

Unfortunately I don’t have nay details of construction or ingredients. I’d like to think it’s Vam and Victoria Sponge underneath (in keeping with the red theme), but I guess I shall never know !

That’s it for today. See you Wednesday!

[Original] Trek Cake to end them all…?

Friday, July 25th, 2008

In May of this year the very passionate team over at Ace of Cakes, have created the (original series) Trek cake that bests all other Trek cakes everywhere. A fondant icing laden mini work of art.

Shown on the USA based  Food network  - more about the bakery which the  series, “Ace of Cakes” is based on  - can be seen here  (warning flash heavy website).

And on that incredibly sweet note, I shall say, see you Monday!!

Could this be the Chocolatiest Dalek in the world?

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

Over at Chocoblog, the small (but perfectly formed team of Chocoholics) give you step by step instructions on how to create – arguably- The Chocolatiest Dalek in the world.

Choclatey_Dalek_Full

Now I don’t know about you, but this creation involves too much chocolate for me ! More detailed close-ups below.

I know, it’s almost unbelievable that I should even write the phrase ‘too much chocolate’, but seriously, – it is.

See you Friday!

W.O.W. , and a trio of superheroes..,

Monday, July 21st, 2008
Over at the ‘Great White Snark’ blog, the marvelous baking talents of Kathryn (from New Zealand), are shown off and explained in detail. Her trio of comic superheroes cakes and cupcakes are pictured below:

Superhero Trio Cupcakes
Made with vanilla bean and yogurt cake features layers of berry filling and buttercream, and fondant detailing. Sounds Delish. The cakes were created to raise money, to help a friend of Kathryn’s receive Breast cancer treatment. For full details check out the original post over at ‘Great White Snark’

Sometimes I come across a gorgeous geekcake which unfortunately has no creator details. Below is one such cake, but it’s W.O.W detail compelled me to post it.

WOW Cake
If you created or know who created this magnificent piece of bakery, then please contact me so I can give correct credit.

That’s it for today. See you Wednesday!

Weighted Companion Cube, Edible Elder Gods, and Pi !

Friday, July 18th, 2008
Jennyvier over at Flickr, got inventive with cookie dough and baked these delicious looking ‘Weighted Companion Cube’ cookies from the game ‘Portal’.

The dough was apparently leftover from making Battlestar Galactica Cylon cookies. Is there no end to this woman’s Geekcake genius?

Richard Crawford’s Wife used I’m-not-sure-what-ingenuity to create this fiercesomely cute Cthulu cake for his 40th Birthday.

Cthulu_geekcake
Richard describes it’s complicated construction:
“She used a teddy bear cake pan as the basis. The wings are Styrofoam. The tentacles are marshmallows. And in addition to being the coolest cake ever, by the coolest wife ever, it was absolutely delicious.”
If Cthulu were ever to wake from slumber, I hope it’s in an edible cake form!

Last, but by no means least, Pi cookies created by Spugmeistress over at Flickr:

Hhhhhhmmmmmmmmmmmm, Pi. That’s it for today. See you Monday!

It’s the Tardis !

The return of Dr Who to TV has introduced non-stargate travel to an entirly new generation of geeks in waiting.
For some reason, Daleks, the Tardis, and Supermario Land, seems to inspire the most Geekcake creations. Not being a baker myself I’d guess it’s the original shape of these items (decorated cone, rectangular box, and erm Mushroom), that draw people to want to turn them into baked goods.
The Tardis pictured above was spotted by A Gabriel Baysto. Unfortunately I was unable to find the original poster on Flikr.com. If you created it, then please email me so I can give full credit. Jordan, whomever he/she is  - is lucky that to have someone willing to create such cake-ilicious Tardis goodness for them.
The Tardis pictured below was spotted by Abi Silvester, the editor of CraftCrafty.Tv.

The thing I love most about this Tardis cake, is that it seems to be resting on a glace Danish pastry-type base. So it combines cake AND pastry! What more could you possibly ask for from a Geekcake?
See you Friday !

First a big thank you ! – plus a posting schedule…

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

Firstly let me say a big thank you to everyone who heard about my budding blog and responded with links to pictures of their own Geekcake creations.
I seem to be gaining interested readers fast so I thought I would clarify exactly what (and when) I intend to do with this blog.

Firstly if its a baked good, and geeky, then I deem it a Geekcake.

Secondly, I will never feature a Hello Kitty cake. Why? Well Hello Kitty has her own army of fandom and although I wish them well I am not one of them.
If you want to see every Hello Kitty product imaginable (and some you probably would never have thought of) then I suggest you take a look at the “Hello Kitty Hell“. It sometimes features Sanrio baked goods, and well… if you’re curious go look for yourself.
Thirdly, I intend, to update every once a week, more if real life permits. Sometimes I’ll only post one cake, sometimes I’ll post more, it all depends on how much time I have. It is however, very unlikely you’ll see more than four in any single day. Cake is best appreciated in moderation. I’ve yet to witness it but I am told there is such a thing as too much cake.
Fourthly, I do not have a Facebook account, and am unlikely to ever get one so I am unable to see any Facebook members locked photographs! Ditto Myspace. Ditto Bebo. Why? I don’t have time! I’m too busy finding geekcakes hidden away in the dustiest corners of the ‘intarwebs.

Finally, if you don’t like my wordpress interface, then you can read the blog via LJ syndicated community Here (sorry now defunct), or standard RSS feed Here. (on it’s way soon)

Thank you for visiting Geekcake.

Welcome to Geek Cake !

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

The purpose of this blog is simple and twofold

1) To trawl the intarwebs finding pictures (and if possible the story behind) the geekiest cakes there are.

2) To share those pictures from one central locale – here!

I hope you enjoy looking at these bizzare edible works of geek as much as I do.

If you have made a geek cake, or seen one online that you think should be shared with world, please email me at faintdreams[at]gmail[dot]com.

Thanks !
